To be precise, the Goan community is not homogeneous as its often made out to be, by display of the questions, concerns, aggravations and tidbits that make it out of our minds onto Goanet, at gatherings, etc.
Lusitanians is what the Portuguese were referred (alternative country name: Lusitania), as say Hibernians to the Irish (Hibernia), Hayastanian to the Armenian (Hayastan), Eesti(nian) to the Estonian. Azania is a whole other story. Goans who have lived in Africa can get into that. Often people find such names unique, and in fact we all do at certain points in our growth. much like unique sounds, unique sounding words, etc. The uniqueness is on account of not merely the collective sound, but may include other reasons such as events: wars, pageants, seats of power, etc. (That need researching). I took Marathi close to heart and if I was in India would have been writing on aesthetics in that language. It had to do with its structure, words, etc. But concerns now are different. My Dad would have a glow when he he mentioned the Lusitanians and him going to watch them play. It was the entire experience I believe: the word, the team, the events, the joys of watching them, and coming back the name Lusitanians. Dad was a simple person who has good taste. He hardly had a primary education but leaned towards sounds, words, etc. We always take something / gain something, from the oppressor / colonial / or however one wants to see them--and make it our own. Whether it is the language, the cuisine, the making of small batches of wine, the cut of a dress, baggy suited pants, a name, even proverbs--the whole shebang. Knowledgeably this has been happening since Roman times, and veritably much earlier. Such questions in the manner asked appear naive and often are, and largely on account of how they are framed, by various minds, and often seen confusedly as in say: Portuguese itle/ title vait asle zalear Goykarani "Lusitanian" he naun sounsarant gheun kiteac gele ani tea voir passarlem. Sang poi maca. Do share for what its worth.
