The practice was observed in Goa on 23rd of June, i.e. on the eve of the Feast of St.John the Baptist. The date is significant and relates to the imprisonment and beheading of St.John the Baptist by King Herod of the Jews. "Kill the Jew" is reprisal for the slaying of St.John the Baptist !
