Goa Governor B.V.Wanchoo has today been urged to act in public interest and immediately sack Goa’s controversial Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni.
Atmaram Nadkarni’s continuance as Advocate General of Goa has become untenable in view of his gross misconduct and high-handed behaviour. Atmaram Nadkarni had made a patently false statement before the Bombay High Court at Goa on 16th September that he would not be present in Goa from 17th September as he had to go to Delhi to attend the Goa mining case before the Supreme Court. However on 16th afternoon the Advocate General took a flight to Kochi in Kerala on a private visit. The First Law officer of the State misleading the Court is a very serious issue. Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni has failed to be the custodian of the State’s best interests. Atmaram Nadkarni who is India’s highest paid Advocate General has become a white elephant and a huge financial liability to the State exchequer. He is being paid up to Rs eight lakhs a month and in addition Rs 75,000 per day on his every jaunt to Delhi. The sordid conduct of the Advocate General has not changed even after the severe tongue lashing that the Goa Government recently received from the Supreme Court in the case pertaining to NEET postgraduate students of the Goa Medical College. The Goa Governor should order a probe into the very frequent trips made out of Goa by Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni. There also needs to be an independent investigation into the huge assets acquired by the Advocate General. Advocate General is accused of pressurizing his Officer on Special Duty Prasanna Acharya who is also Director of Mines to the benefit of the mining lobby in their illegal Acts. One fails to understand as to why a high ranking official like Prasanna Acharya continues to be the OSD of the Advocate General. It is no secret that the mining department is currently being virtually run from the office of the Advocate General. There is an urgent need for Goa to get an honest, sincere and worthy Advocate General who could properly and fairly tender sound legal advice to the Government. As Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is conveniently turning a nelson’s eye to the misdeeds of the Advocate General, Governor Wanchoo should intervene to ensure that the Constitutional framework of system of governance is upheld and not trampled upon.
