*Environmental History of India: Historiography, Issues and Debates* A special lecture by Professor Madhav Gadgil.
The Department of History, Goa University is organising a special lecture by Dr.Madhav Gadgil (D. D. Kosambi Visiting Research Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Goa University) *on Environmental History of India: Historiography, Issues and Debates* on 9th October 2013 at 2.30p.m. at the Conference Hall of Administrative Building, Goa University campus. All are cordially invited for this programme. Using his own investigations of conservation traditions and pastoralism, Prof Gagil will illustrate different perspectives that have guided the study of Environmental History, using diverse sources of information, covering folklore, ancient and modern literary references, geographical patterns, epidemiology, and oral history. Prof Madhav Gadgil did his Ph.D. thesis on fish behaviour which won him the IBM Fellowship at Harvard Computing Center and became a citation classic. He has been a Lecturer on Biology at Harvard, a Distinguished Indo-American Lecturer at UC Berkeley and a Visiting Professor at Stanford. He was a member of the Science Advisory Council to Prime Minister of India from 1986-90, and Chaired the Science & Technology Advisory Panel of Global Environment Facility from 1998-2002. >From 1973 to 2004 he was on the faculty of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore where he established the Centre for Ecological Sciences. This has led to innovative experiments of involving High School and College teachers and students in inventorying and monitoring of biodiversity.
