HIGH COURT GIVES SPLIT VERDICT ON DISSOLUTION: High Court judges at the 
Panjim Bench on Wednesday differed in their verdict over the dissolution of 
the assembly with Justice AS Aguiar quashing governor's order and Justice 
PV Hardas upholding them. The split judgement came on two petitions filed 
by Congress leaders challenging the February 27 order of Governor, Mr 
Mohammed Fazal, on the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, 
continuance of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and his council of ministers 
and his order on Contingency Fund Ordinance. (H)

FINAL JUDGEMENT ONLY OF ACADEMIC INTEREST: CM: Reacting to the court's 
judgement, chief minister Manohar Parrikar told press persons that "since 
the judges have differed in judgement, there is no judgement at all". He 
added that the actual judgement would serve merely academic interest. (H)

OPPN DEMANDS RECALL OF GOVERNOR: Addressing a press conference in Panjim 
yesterday, the Nationalist Congress Party state unit president Dr Wilfred 
de Souza said that the order of Mr Justice AS Aguiar has made it clear that 
whatever happened in Goa on February 27 was "highly illegal" and the 
governor acted in improper manner and as such his recall was absolutely 
necessary. (NT)

QUITTING TO ENSURE VICTORY: The former Tourism minister, Mr Philip Neri 
Rodrigues, said that his decision to quit the ministerial position was only 
to concentrate on fighting the elections as an independent candidate from 
Velim and to ensure his victory. Mr Rodrigues said that since the BJP 
organization network was very poor in Velim he opted to fight as an 
independent candidate. (NT)

KHALAP APPLIES FOR CONG RE-ADMISSION: Outgoing Information Technology 
Minister, Mr Ramakant Khalap, who quit the BJP three days ago, has applied 
to the high command for re-admission to the Congress even as the Congress 
candidates are to be finalized in Delhi on  Thursday night. (H)

GOVT OBJECTS TO NTPC DATA ON MHADEI: The state government has raised a 
strong protest over National Thermal Power Corporation's move to convey to 
Karnataka its willingness to take up the Rs.1,100 crore Mhadei 
Hydro-electric Power Project though the matter is pending before Central 
Water Commission. (GT)

WATER PROBLEMS WOULD ABATE: CM: Problems of water scarcity would abate 
considerably in a couple of days, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced 
at a press conference at the Party Head Quarters in Panjim. "It is nothing 
to panic about," he assured. (H)

YOUTH HELD FOR RAPING MINOR: A 23-year-old youth, Anil S Garad, from 
Gateshwarnagar, Mapusa, was arrested by the police yesterday for allegedly 
raping a 13-year-old-girl on Tuesday around 3.45 pm, when the victim along 
with an old aunt and two minor brothers had gone to fetch firewood in the 
nearby hill area; the girl wandered further, little realizing that the 
accused was hiding in the bushes. Garad gagged her and dragged her further 
into the bushes and under threat of dire consequences allegedly raped her. (GT)

POLLS PROVE BLESSING: Many primary schools in South Goa, which are on the 
verge of collapse, will be attended to before elections. Thanks to the 
elections, the repair work which was pending due to bureaucratic red 
tapism, will be expedited as many of them are required to be used as 
polling stations. (NT)

Rosary College, Goa, through its NSS Unit and Women's Cell, in 
collaboration with the Verna Parish, and partly sponsored by AIACHE and

will be held at the Maharaj Mutt at Danda in Siolim on May 26 at 8 pm, by 
Verodina award winner, Prof Rajendra Kerkar, through the medium of a slide

INDIA TO FACE SHORTAGE OF I T WORKERS: India's software industry may face 
an acute shortage of more than half-a-million professionals by 2005, 
National Association of Software and Service Companies said in a report 
released on Tuesday. According to a UN report released in July last year, 
India loses two billion dollars a year in resources through the brain drain 
of 100,000 skilled computer professionals to the United States alone. (AFP

SALGAOKAR ASSURES: Independent candidate and industrialist Anil Salgaokar 
has said that for many years Sanvordem constituency was represented by 
non-ruling party MLA, as a result of which the College village was 
neglected. Salgaokar assured the voters to solve some problems affecting 
Collem such as drinking water, construction of coverup sheds and compound 
walls for Hindu and Muslim crematoriums besides upgradation of the Collem 
public health centre. (H)

HEAVY SHOWERS IN PANJIM: Panjim and surrounding areas received heavy 
showers around 9.30 am today.

DIOCESAN YOUTH MEET: The first all Goa Youth Convention with the theme "In 
Faith We Are Formed, The World We Will Transform", organized by the 
Diocesan Youth Centre, Goa, will commence on May 8 at Sarvajanik High 
School, Carambolim. (H)

MINIATURE SHRINES FOUND AT CHANDOR: The Archaeological Survey of India 
continued the excavation at Chandor (ancient Chandrapura) for the third 
season. This season's digging at the temple site has yielded evidence of 
miniature shrines with connecting stone pathways and tile floorings. (H)
