I WAS HUMILIATED BY BJP WORKERS: RAVI: In a sudden turn of events, Deputy 
Chief Minister Ravi Naik submitted his resignation from the party's primary 
membership and as Deputy Chief Minister in the caretaker Parrikar 
government yesterday. Naik's sudden exit caused a stir in political circles 
as he was a member of the BJP's election committee. Naik lamented that he 
faced humiliation from the BJP Ponda office bearers and activists. (GT)

'BIRDS OF THE SAME FEATHER': A tired-looking Chief Minister Manohar 
Parrikar reacted with an air of 'good-riddance', on the 'sudden' 
resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Ravi Naik. "Birds of the same feather 
flock together. Those who have left us now, have gone back to the Congress 
flock, one which boats of several persons tainted with corruption," Mr 
Parrikar claimed. (H)

NAIK WAS NOT FULLY WITH BJP: PARRIKAR: Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, 
yesterday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party was anticipating the 
resignation of Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Ravi Naik from the party and 
denied that Mr Naik's action would have any serious repercussion on the 
party's prospect during the May 30 elections. (NT)

ticket to former MLA from Sanguem, Prabhakar Gaonkar, while Forest Minister

BAPTISM CERTIFICATE CAN AUTHENTICATE BIRTH CERTIFICATE: The Supreme Court 
has ruled that if a birth certificate is the true reflection of the baptism 
record and it contains the fact that it was read and checked before the 
'god-parents', the same may not be discarded. Allowing an appeal by Luis 
Caetano Viegas, a division Bench Comprising Justice S Rajendra Babu and 
Justice Ruma Pal said that in view of their ruling the trial court was 
right in allowing the birth certificate of the appellant's mother on the

INTERACTIVE PROGRAMME WITH PUNDALIK: Konkani Bhasha Mandal will organize 
'Bhasabhas-Bhett', an interaction programme wherein renowned Konkani writer 
Pundalik Narayan Naik will be interviewed at the Konkani Bhavan, Margao, at 
4.30 pm today. Naik has recently returned from United States of America 
where he was awarded CR Parikh Resident Fellowship under Indian

TWO HELD FOR THEFT: Two personsHazel Mendes and Joe Almeidahave been 
arrested for snatching the purse of one Balasubramanyam of Mumbai, which 
contained on Yashika camera, gold rings and cash, near the Secretariat in

CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS DUMPED ALONG KAVLEM BYPASS: The Margao-Panji by-pass 
road passing through Ponda seems to have become a dumping ground for the 
city's construction debris. (GT)

400 MAGICIANS from across the country will participate in a two-day magic 
convention on May 12 and 13. The convention "Magic Karishma' will be 
organized by the All India Magic Academy. Twenty magicians from Goa will 
take part in the convention, which will conduct workshops as well as hold 
competitions. There are nearly 100 magicians in Goa. (GT)

RAIN-PROOF INFRASTRUCTURE: There is no evidence that the completion of the 
new irrigation grid which will make it possible to draw water from the 
Chapora riverwill dramatically improve the situation. The rains may have 
lowered temperatures, but it is clear that the infrastructure in the State 
is still far from rain proof. No sooner the first drops fell, predictably, 
the electricity failed. This despite the fact that we have been subjected 
to repeated power shut-downs for pre-monsoons maintenance in the last two 
weeks, including a day-long shut-dwon last Sunday, when the mercury as at

400-YR-OLD CROSS AT BETIM: A sixteenth century cross on the banks of the 
river Mandovi near the Betim ferryboat crossover, has attracted the 
attention of the Goa Heritage Action Group for its outstanding 
architectural beauty. Mr Prajal Sakhardande of CHAG says that the cross 
possessed an unique architectural style which corresponds to that of the 
Reis Magos Church (the first in Bardez) with slight traces of Hindu 
influence being visible. Unfortunately, several labourers have been using 
the flat black rock near the cross to relieve themselves, according to 
residents of the area. (NT)

Verem, proved disastrous for 2 youths, when one of them fell inside from 
the roof and severely injured his let. His colleague ran away leaving him

LITERARY AWARD TO SHANKAR RAMANI: Kala Academy will organize a function on 
May 12 at 10 am to present its prestigious Literary Award 'Gomant Sharda' 
to the renowned Goan poet, Shankar Ramani, for his lifetime contribution to 
poetry. The award includes a Gomant Sharda memento, citation and cash of 
Rs.50,000. Coinciding with the auspicious occasion, a literary meet of Goan
