SENSITIVE MATERIAL: The Chief Electoral Office has directed the police to 
confiscate all material either on film or in the form of literature which 
may cause communal tension in the State during elections. (GT)

BAN ON SCREENING OF FILM ON GUJARAT CARNAGE: The office of the Chief 
Electoral Officer has imposed a ban on the screening of the film on Gujarat 
carnage entitled "Hey Ram" in Goa, in view of the elections and has 
instructed the DIG of Police to attach the cassettes if they are surfaced 
anywhere in the State. (H)

ESCAPE FROM SADA: Three personsPallani Swami, Arjun Dhakane and Kanakraj 
Nagappa--who ere convicted for serious offences and under-going 
imprisonment in the sub-jail at Sada, Vasco, escaped in the early hours of 
May 25. The trio escaped through a hole they made to the wall of the

COALITION GOVERNMENTS, JUMBO CABINETS INEVITABLE: Coalition governments and 
jumbo-sized cabinets may be hard realities of the near future, according to 
opinion expressed by leaders of three major parties in Goa, at the "Goa 
Elections 2002" function organised by the Goa Union of Journalists at Hotel 
Nova Goa yesterday, at which Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, NCP state 
president Dr Wilfred de Souza and Goa Pradesh Congress Committee acting 
president Shantaram Naik voiced their views on various issues. (GT)

BUYAO PROMISES: Solving the vexed issue of Sonsodo garbage, recognition for 
the artists and self-employment are the highlights of the manifesto 
declared by an independent candidate from Fatorda, Mr Ulhas Buyao. (NT)

COALITION GOVERNMENT: Senior leader of the BJP and former chief minister of 
UP, Rajnath Singh, did not rule out the possibility of the party forming an 
alliance with others if need be, in order to form the next government. He 
was addressing a press conference in Panjim yesterday. (GT)

CASSETTES, CDS SEIZED: Margao police yesterday raided a shop in the Gandhi 
Market and seized duplicate Hindi film and blue film cassettes and CDs 
together worth over Rs.1.5 lakh. Police have arrested Joseph Rodrigues and 
an offence has been registered against him. (NT)

UPDATE OF GSCP PROJECT: After a successful run in the first stage of the 
project, we are now coming to the end of the second phase of the same. The 
third phase, when schools actually begin to use the equipment will start on 
June 3 for this particular project. 21 schools were selected on basis of 
space, necessity and support to be equipped and networked by the Goa 
Sudharop Computers for School project. For the past 2 months, Tom and I 
have been working to implement the same for the said schools. (Ashley

CAUSE OF POWER PROBLEMS: The electricity supply in the Western Grid 
collapsed on May 23, due to technical problems, as a result the power 
supply to Goa from the Maharashtra State Electricity Board grid failed. (NT)

BRAHMANAND SWAMI NO MORE: The Temporal Head of Padmanabha Sampradaya, His 
Holiness Brahmanand Swami of Haturli Muth, took Mahanirvana on Friday 
morning at Tapobhomi, Cundaim. The mortal remains of the Swamiji have been 
kept for public veneration at the Samadhi Mandir. (GT)

MEET YOUR ALDONA CANDIDATE: All the candidates standing from the Aldona 
Constituency namely from the BJP, Congress, MGP, NCP and Su-Raj party have 
been invited for a meeting at Azad Bhavan, Alto Betim on 25 May from 5 PM 
to 6.30 PM., and requested to ensure they come in time since this is 
intended to be a short controlled session, where each candidate tells the 
citizen why they should vote for him, about the party manifesto, and then 
will follow a question and answer session. PCAF, a non-governmental, 
apolitical registered body working for the welfare of citizens in Porvorim, 
has organised the meet.

MAY QUEEN IN KUWAIT: Canril Doreen Mendoza, 17 years, beat 42 other 
contestants to win the prestigious May Queen Ball 2002 which was organised 
by the Goan Welfare Society, Kuwait. The first runner-up was Nisha 
Braganza, followed by Shirley Marshall in the third place. (GT)

CHILDREN'S CAMP AT BIG FOOT: The 8th annual "Big Foot Children's Art Camp" 
at Ancestral Goa, Loutulim, concluded recently wherein 45 children 
participated. The campers were provided accommodation at Ancestral House 
"Casa Araujo Alvares", a 250-year-oldmansion. In keeping with the theme of 
being and living with nature, children were treated to traditional food and 
advised on the negative aspects of packed and fast foods. (GT)

SAD DEMISE OF HUGO: Hugo Souza of Raia, Goa, passed away in a mission 
hospital in Himachal Pradesh. He probably died of cancer. A rank holder 
from Xavier's Bombay, he passed his LLB with a gold medal. He decided to 
come to Goa to contribute to free Goa and edited the first Konkani daily in 
free Goa. His logic, commitment, integrity and reputation, at whatever he 
did, was unsurpassable. This man could have been anything and anyone but he 
decided to be with his own people and spent a major time of his life 
dealing with kids to help them grow up. His belief in India and its 
potential was tremendous. Adept at a number of things, Hugo basically 
called himself a theoretician. Right from reading puzzle books of Martin 
Gardener, to discussing world politics, astronomy, law, history, 
philosophy, sociology, science…you name it, this guy had very few peers

FREE MAGNETO THERAPY CAMP: A free magneto therapy camp, organised by the 
Arpora-Nagoa village panchayat in co-ordination with Sparsh Magnetic Health 
Centre, Nagpur, is underway at Arpora village panchayat hall and will

"COMBAT LAW" RELEASED: A human rights magazine "Combat Law", edited jointly 
by Colin Gonsalves and Mihir Desai, was released by wellknown architect 
Dean D'Cruz at the Friday Balcao of the Goa DESC in Mapusa, after an 
interesting and well-attended presentation, in the fortnightly series, 
conducted by him yesterday evening.
     "Gonsalves and Desai work for the India Centre for Human Rights, an 
organisation which helps people where legal needs are concerned. The main 
intention of the magazine is to make people aware of the situation which 
exists in the country right now, from the human rights point of view," 
according to Adv Ratna Prabhu of the Goa unit of the India Centre for Human 
Rights.  Topics covered in the inaugural issue are: Genocide in Gujarat, 
Anthrax and TRIPS, Convergence Bill, Rape Law Gender Neutrality, 
Displacement of Adivasis, State Repression, etc. (GoaNOW)

Youth, Majorda, to emerge champions in the All Goa Shiroda Inter Village 
soccer tournament at Shiroda. Goa Velha played methodical football to stun 
Sangolda Lightning 3-1 via the tie-breaker to move into the semi-finals of 
the Xth Nerul village Panchayat cup. Young Strikers, Benaulim, defeated 
Raia Sporting by a solitary goal to move into the quarter-finals of Fr 
Robert Vaz Memorial inter-village soccer tournament, at Rosary Grounds,
