GIRLS OUTSMART BOYS IN HSSC EXAMINATIONS: Girls kept their tradition of 
outdoing the boys with their success rate registering as much as 72.75 per 
cent as compared to 64.31 per cent of boys in the Higher Secondary School 
Certificate Examinations this year. An overall pass percentage of 70.36 per 
cent was recorded. (G)

"WE WILL…": The all-India Congress Committee secretary and incharge of Goa 
Desk, Mr Ramesh Chennithala has said that there was a growing wave in 
favour of the Congress party and that it would get a comfortable majority. 
Senior leader of the BJP and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mr Pramod 
Mahajan, expressed confidence of gaining a comfortable majority. The 
all-India general secretary of the Nationalist Congress Party, Mr PA 
Sangma, said, "We are getting closer to the magic number of 21." Third 
Front consisting of the MGP and the United Goans Democratic Party has 
expressed confidence of winning a majority in the May 30 elections. (NT)

JINX OVER SPEAKER'S POST: Dr Wilfred de Souza, president of the Goa Unit of 
the Nationalist Congress Party, has a rather ominous message for Speaker 
Pratapsingh Rane. Dr de Souza's research shows that most of the Speakers, 
who sought re-election, had to bite dust at the hustings. "Will the history 
repeat itself?" wonders the NCP leader and former chief minister. (GT)

GARBAGE SOLUTION WITHIN 100 DAYS: MGP candidate Auda Viegas yesterday said 
that her priority will be to solve the garbage problem plaguing Margao 
constituency within 100 days if she was elected. (GT)

HUNG ASSEMBLY? The ruling BJP as well as Congress Party are trying hard to 
reach the magic figure of 21 on their own as there are apprehensions in the 
political circles that May 30 elections may throw up a hung assembly. (H)

"RIVER PRINCESS" ISSUE: The silhouette of the "River Princess" appears to 
be sharply etched on the outcome of the results in the 30 May elections in 
the coastal segment of Calangute. Congress nominee Agnelo Fernandes has 
geared up his campaign, to make a difference in the results. (GT)

"DUST POLLUTION NOT A MAJOR ISSUE": "Mining dust pollution is not the 
creation of mine owners. In fact, it is not at all the major issue in 
Sanvordem constituency," said Anil Salgaokar, who is confident of winning 
(as an independent candidate). Salgaocar said that he had entered politics 
to cleanse it and also to make better use of his finances for social and 
development works in the constituency, which helped him to earn wealth. (GT)

SENA PLANS: The Shiv Sena has assured Goan voters to rename Vasco-da-Gama 
as Sambhajinagar besides providing more funds to Konkani and Marathi 
Academy. It also assured to remove all religious structures along the 
roads, besides other assurances. Their senior leader Udhava Thackeray said 
that Sena was receiving good response in Goa. (NT)

"WITHOUT WAITING FOR GOAN FUNDS": In one of the grandest election promises, 
Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, assured that if Goans 
elect a Congress government to power in the forthcoming elections, then the 
Maharashtra government would ensure continuity of the Tillari irrigation 
joint project without waiting for Goa's share of the money. (NT)

CAMPAIGN CLOSE: All that noise of public meetings often addressed by 
national leaders, long motorcades, street corner assemblies, loud speaker 
announcements and constant visits by groups of people with the local 
candidate or boys issuing the parties' identity cards, which had kept Goans 
occupied one way or other for the last fortnight, have finally died away 
with the poll campaign having come to a close yesterday evening at 5 pm. 
The last scene we witnessed in Assagao witnessed was an almost unending 
motorcade of cars and motorcycles decorated with party banners and the 
lotus flower cutouts, with a beaming BJP candidate for Siolim, Dayanand 
Mandrekar, along with the drummers, music and sloganeering. (GoaNOW)

NO TRUST MOVE AGAINST MMC CHAIRPERSON: Five councilors of the Mapusa 
Municipal Council have moved a motion of no-confidence against the 
chairperson Michael Carrasco, whose group is supporting the BJP candidate 
Adv Francis D'Souza. The councilors include Prakash Bhivshet, Armindo 
Braganza, Neeta Natekar, Manisha Narvekar and Farida D'Souza. (GT)

SIOLIM-SODIEM PANCHAYAT ORDERED TO ISSUE NOC: In a significant order, the 
Deputy Director of Panchayats, Panaji, passed an order directing the 
Siolim-Sodiem panchayat to issue a NOC to one Rita Rodrigues within 15 days 
failing which such permission will be deemed granted after the expiry of 
the period. (GT)

SECURITY AROUND CHURCHES TIGHTENED: The South-Goa police have intensified 
patrolling around the places of worship, particularly belonging to the 
minority communities, in view of Thursday's polling. (H)

NORMAL POWER: The Maharashtra Electricity Board rectified the fault between 
Kala and Lonikand on May 27. Normalcy of power supply has been restored. (NT)

"FISH CURRY AND RICE" READY FOR RELEASE: One of Goa's most sought books 
"Fish Curry and Rice: A Sourcebook on Goa, its Ecology and Life-style", 
which has been out of print now for three years, is eventually ready. On 
World Environment Day, June 5, 2002, Goa Foundation will release its 
fourth, completely revised, updated and enlarged edition at the hands of Dr 
Arvind G Untawale. The new volume of "Fish Curry and Rice" is over 380 (A4 
size) pages and has been printed in both soft and hardcover editions. It 
has a bibliography, a subject index and is also profusely illustrated. (GoaNOW)
