GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS 02 June 2002 BJP STAKES CLAIM TO FORM GOVERNMENT IN GOA: Emerging as the single largest party in Goa with 17 seats, four short of majority in the 40-member house, has staked the claim to form the government in a hung assembly. Congress which won 21 seats last time could only manage 16 seats. Caretaker Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party, later drove to Raj Bhawan to stake claim to form government, BJP spokesman Subhash Salkar said. The United Goans Democratic Party and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party alliance, which bagged five seats, are likely to play a key role in the formation of the new government. In New Delhi, BJP President Jana Krishnamurthy said his party would seek support of the UGDP and the MGP to form government. Congress President Sonia Gandhi asked party general secretary Oscar Fernandes to rush to Goa to take stock of the situation in the wake of fractured verdict. A Congress delegation too yesterday met Governor Mohammad Fazal requesting him to take into confidence all political parties before inviting any one to form government. (DDINEWS at ddinews.com)
VOTERS TEACH EIGHT DEFECTORS A LESSON: In all eight defectors, who along with 19 other 'habitual defectors' were responsible for creating political instability in Goa by switching over their loyalties frequently, have been defeated by Goan electorate. (NT) BJP, CONG TUG-OF-WAR: The May 30 election has thrown up a hung assembly and thus triggered an intense battle for power between the BJP, which bagged 17 seats, and the Congress which got 16. The UGDP on 3 seats, the MGP two, NCP 1 and while independent Filipe Neri Rodrigues, was elected from Velim. (H) VICTORY LONG OVER-DUE FOR MATHANY: For United Goans Democratic leader, Mathany Saldanha, his victory in an Assembly poll has come after 26 years of social work. Election 2002 was his eight one in the last over two decades. He defeated three-time MLA, Mauvin Godinho, from Cortalim. (H) 14 NEW FACES: This year's election brought in 14 new faces to the assembly. However, in the 1999 elections the number of the first timers was 16. (NT) FRACTURED MANDATE & GOVT FORMATION: This is an era of coalition governments. The mandarins of power are busy exploring all possible avenues towards government formation. Left to themselves, the 17-member BJP group and the Congress Party with 16 members are helpless groups desperately seeking support from smaller groups to grab the throne. While the Congress would harp on these groups to draw strength to form a coalition government, the BJP would not hesitate to try to split the Congress itself. The BJP has forged ahead of the Congress and there is every likelihood of Manohar Parrikar forming the next government unless the Congress acts fast. (WE-GT) CONGRESS SUFFERS MAJOR BLOW IN SOUTH: The Congress, who won 12 seats from South Goa in 1999 assembly elections, suffered a major blow having lost two seats each to the BJP and the UGDP. The MGDP lost is bastionthe Quepem constituencyto the Congress. (WE-GT) NIRMALA RESIGNS: Congress president in Goa, Nirmala Sawant, has tendered her resignation owning moral responsibility for the failure of the party to get majority seats in the polls. (H) CHURCHILL HUMBLED FINALLY: The mighty strongman of Benaulim, Churchill Alemao, has been finally humbled in his bastion. The three-time MLA, who rose to become the chief minister of Goa, tasted defeat at the hands of his one-time friend turned foe, NRI-turned-politician Mickky Pacheco, by a margin of 1049 votes. (H) SPEAKER NEVER WINS, CM NEVER LOSES: An outgoing Speaker has never won in the past in State elections but Pratapsingh Rane broke the jinx when he retained Poriem for the eight consecutive time, defeating his BJP rival Santoba Dessai. Similarly, a chief minister has never lost. Manohar Parrikar maintained the tradition by retaining the Panaji seat. Parrikar created history by recording his third straight win in a constituency which had never elected a legislator twice except JB Gonsalves. (WE-GT) POLL SIDELIGHTS: Victoria Fernandes accepted defeat without even waiting for the announcement declaring the final results of St Cruz constituency where she had won by 40 votes making her the sole woman candidate to the Goa legislative assembly. (H) HIGH DRAMA: BJP candidate from Santa Cruz, Anil Hoble, and his supporters took out a victory procession and spoke long and loud about how the Congress should have fielded some other candidate than Victoria Fernandes. Then fate stepped in and they heard that Victoria (Congress) had actually polled 40 votes more than him (following a recount). (WE-GT) WILL UGDP'S MICKKY DEFECT? Eye-witnesses in the UGDP camp informed Gomantak Times that former chief minister and presently Congress party MLA-elect as well as the BJP MP were camping at UGDP MLA-elect Miccky Pacheco's house, trying to convince him to jump on their bandwagon. According to reliable sources, BJP is enticing the NRI with deputy chief ministership, while the Congress has offered him ministership. (WE-GT) 4-WHEELER DAMAGED IN BLAZE: A four-wheeler, belonging to Ms Antonette Dias, was damaged in a blaze in Assolna which occurred late night and the police are ascertaining the reason of the incident whether it is a backlash of the election results.
