STATE PAYS RICH TRIBUTES TO FREEDOM FIGHTERS: There State government on
Tuesday felicitated 58 freedom fighters for their distinguished work,
during the freedom struggle, at the Azad Maidan in Panjim. Interestingly,
only four MLAS, including three ministers in the Parrikar government were
present at the function. (H)
HOSPICIO IS LEAKING: Rain water seepage in a public hospital like Hospicio
may seem strange. But, a correspondence between the Hospicio authorities
and the PWD in the last few days have thrown light on the fact that the
hospital is indeed leaking, not at one place but in most wards. (H)
FREEDOM FIGHTERS AGAINST DEFECTIONS: Noted freedom fighter, Muralidhar
Rane, has cautioned that the freedom fighters will not take things lying
down if there occur more political defections in the near future. He was
addressing the function held at the Lohia Maidan as part of 18th June

"GOA VICTORY IS A TURNING POINT": The Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra
Modi, has said that the Bharatiya Janata Party's victory in Goa election is
the beginning of the destruction of the Congress party's dreams in future
elections in the country. Talking to Goan reporters after inaugurating the
Rs.4.22-crore rehabilitation township project at Devgad on Monday, Mr Modi
indicated the BJP victory in Goa would be an election plank in Gujarat,
which is expected to go to polls in October. (NT)
MAN FALLS OFF BOAT, DROWNS: Captain of vessel "MV Gosalia Porpsects", Joe
D'Silva died when he fell off the boat yesterday afternoon. The incident
occurred when D'Silva was climbing up the boat, which is a mini-transhipper
in nature. Though the reason of his falling into the water was not known,
sources said that the captain got a sudden heart attack. (NT)
PACHECO WARNS AGAINST BREAKING "RIVER PRINCESS": Tourism minister Mr
Francisco (Mickky) Pacheco said although he is waiting for the court
judgement on the "River Princess" case, he would not allow anyone to break
the ship at that point and promised to take stern action against those who
cause any detrimental damage to Goa's environment. (NT)
CHAIN SNATCHED: A burglar entered a residential house at Cortalim in the
wee hours of Tuesday and snatched a gold chain worth around Rs.8,000 from
the neck of a woman, Piedade Coutinho (60), who was asleep. (H)
DOG TAX BYE-LAWS: As per the amended bye-laws, which have already come into
force, a life tax of Rs.100 will be imposed on every sterilized dog,
however, for a non-sterilised dog, the tax will be Rs.1,000. A licence is
mandatory for every dog, sterilized or unsterilised, without which the
owner will be fined. (H)
ONE MORE DIES: The death toll in the mini bus accident at Neoginagar on
Monday rose to two with a young girl, who was grievously injured succumbing
to her wounds yesterday. The mini bus had turned turtle at Neoginagar
killing the conductor on the spot and injuring 34 passengers, including

MOPA AIRPORT IS DESHPRABHU'S PRIORITY: An international airport at Mopa
with the help of the Central government and the construction of Ravindra
Bhavan at Pernem are some of the priorities of Congress Party spokesman and
Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu, according to an interview in "Herald".
BODY AT POMBURPA FERRY WHARF: The body of Vasanti Chandrakant Chari (30)
from Hatalwadi-Corjuem in Aldona was found floating in the river near the
Pomburpa ferry wharf yesterday. (H)
AGAINST BJP CANDIDATES: The Congress is now all set to file petitions in
the High Court regarding the misuse of the government machinery by the BJP
candidates during the recently held Assembly elections. Former Union
Minister for Law, Ramakant Khalap, who lost in Mandrem, has been appointed
committee-in-charge to coordinate the action. (GT)
GARBAGE PLANT SHOULD BE IN ISOLATED AREA: According to a press release,
Saligao MLA Dr Wilfred de Souza said that although North Goa needs a
garbage treatment plant, the government should choose it more carefully
keeping it away from densely populated areas like the coast and
neighbouring villages. (H)
PET BOTTLES MAYBE BANNED ON MIRAMAR BEACH: As a measure to protect the
environment, the State government has proposed to ban the use of plastic
bottles at the Miramar beach and the wild life sanctuaries. Chief Secretary
Baleshwar Rai made this announcement while speaking after releasing a book
"Sand Dune Vegetation of Goa: Conservation and Management". (GT)
CM URGED TO CURB KTC MISMANAGEMENT: The Goa State Council of Communist
Party of India handed over to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Transport
Minister Pandurang Madkaikar yesterday asking them to improve the
day-to-day functioning and check the mismanagement in Kadamba Transport

SEMINAR ON SIMPUTERS: The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in
collaboration with the Government of Goa, will organise a seminar on
"Simputers" at the Hotel Mandovi in Panaji on 22 June at 10 am. (GT)
LITERACY RATE IMPROVES: Goa ranks fourth after Kerala, Mizoram and
Lakshadweep in literacy following an improvement in its rate from 75.51 per
cent in 1991 to 82.3 per cent in 2001. Goa was the fifth most literate
state in the country in 1991 but has now climbed up one rung. However, it
means that at least 2 lakh people (excluding the population in the age
group of 0-6 years) in Goa, still cannot read or write. (GT)
BOOKLET ON PANCHAYATI RAJ: An informative booklet on Goa Panchayati Raj
Act, 1994, published by the Panchayat Raj Cell of the Peaceful Society, was
released by veteran freedom fighter Dr JF Martins at the TB Cunha Hall,
Panjim, on the occasion of Goa revolution Day yesterday. (GT)
NO TRUST: A no-confidence motion has been served against the Marcaim
Sarpanch Radhika Phadte and deputy Sarpanch Bholu Naik. (GT)
TEXT-BOOK SHORTAGE: The agony of students and parents over the shortage of
text-books continues though the school reopening was delayed by a week and
ten days have elapsed since their opening. (GT)
BETIM CROSS RESTORATION APPEAL: The Goa Heritage Action Group, a registered
NGO, has taken a decision to help restore the 16th century Cross located at
Betim, Bardez. Local residents and well-wishers of the Cross have
generously donated a seed fund to start the restoration. Additional funds
are urgently needed in order to complete the restoration work in time for
the World Goa Day Celebrations on August 18, 2002. For further information,

SHENNOI GOEMBAB'S BIRTH ANNIVERSARY: The 125th birth anniversary of the
late Waman Varde Walaulikar (Shennoi Goembab) falls on 23 June. Apart from
being a researcher, whose contribution to research into Goa's history is
acknowledge by modern day historians, he was a doyen of the modern Konkani
