IT'S BURGLARY TIME IN GOA AGAIN: The monsoon brings rain as well as
burglaries in its wake to Goa. In the early hours of June 21, a gang of
burglars raided the residence the late Babu Naik, a former minister and
political heavyweight, at Aquem in Margao. The culprits decamped with cash
and ornaments, totally valued at around Rs.2.75 lakh. The police, who
promptly appeared on the since within minutes, nabbed two
suspects--Garibdas Daheliya and Dada Pawarfollowing a hot chase along the
railway tracks. However, a woman accomplice, carrying the box containing
the booty, escaped by dodging the police dragnet. Further South in Quepem,
six shopsa grocery shop, a cold storage, a tailoring shop, a wholesale
liquor and gift shop, a video library and a fast food counter--were
attacked by burglars, who lifted CDs, broilers, booze, soft-drinks,
cigarette cartoons, perfume bottles, cash and other items, all worth around
Rs.50,000. (Sources: Various)

DIFFERENCES WITHIN DELAY PORTFOLIO ALLOCATION? The Chief Minster Manohar
Parrikar has one again deferred the allocation of additional portfolios to
his cabinet colleagues. Major differences within the ruling BJP and between
the partners of the coalition government over portfolios distribution, seem
to be the reasons for the postponement. (H)

NRI GOA DIRECTORY: The NRI (Goans) Facilitation Centre, formed by the
Government of Goa with a view to strengthening the cultural roots of Goans
who are working/living abroad, is in the process of compiling a Directory
of NRI (Goans), identifying their problems and ways and means to solve
them. The Centre will also prepare schemes to provide insurance cover to
them and/or their family members and exploring the possibility of
mobilising their resources/talents for the development of Goa. While the
compilation process of the Directory has already started and insurance
cover schemes are being discussed, I seek your guidance for giving concrete
shape to various other schemes in the light of the expectations and needs
of NRI (Goans). Similarly I would like to have the names and addresses of
fellow Goans in your country, for inclusion in the proposed directory.

GREEN TO GREY CONCRETE: Fly by Goa, and you'll be in for a shock to
minutely observe the changes brought about in India's smallest State over
just three decades, as an innovative and just-completed video documentation
using hi-tech satellite imagery says. Bridge, industrial estates, sprawling
across hilltops, small towns getting fast congested and destroyed
sand-dunes are some of the features that emerge from Padmanabh Sathe's
thirty-minute short video, which is titled "Fly by Goa: The Changing
Shores". (Frederick Noronha in Herald)

GOODBYE TO SCHOOLS: Did as many as 43.85 per cent students drop out from
their schools after joining in standard one and before they reached SSC in
2000-2001? The officials of the Directorate of Education insist that the
rate of drop-outs calculated by it though rather unusual for a highly
literate state like Goa is "methodically erroneous but statistically
correct". The survey has been based on the formulas and guidelines from the
Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi. The method is faulty
because it has not taken into consideration the status of repeaters and
those students who leave a particular school to join another School. (GT)

Rodrigues quotes from the book "War and the Art of Investing" by Vivek
Reddy, in NT)

30 MONTHS FOR TEENAGE DRUG SMUGGLER: A 15-year-old Swedish girl from

diamorphine - heroin - and was sentenced to 30 months in youth custody. She

with her mother was thrown into disarray by the September 11 terrorist
attacks. ["Eddie Fernandes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> quoting Evening
