WOMAN'S THROAT SLIT: In a gruesome cold-blooded murder, Maria Cynthia Rodrigues (34) was strangulated and her throat slit in her flat at Swapna Residency in Miramar, on Wednesday forenoon. The murder was discovered after her minor daughter returned home in the afternoon to find the door closed from the inside. It was only when she contacted her neighbours that she saw the body lying in a pool of blood through a gap in the letter-hole. The police were questioning the husband and a friend of the deceased. TENSION IN BICHOLIM: Tension flared up in a village at Bicholim taluka on Wednesday afternoon, when a mob of about 150 villagers from Advalpal rushed to the nearby village of Usap-Nanora and attacked a family and other residents of Usap. The mob gave vent to its anger after suspecting the family to have harassed a newly married womanMaina alias Laxmi (32) of Advalpal--who was married to Laxman Shantaram Gaunker (32) of Usap about seven months ago. Laxmi allegedly committed suicide on October 22 by setting herself ablaze. (H)

PROGRESS UNDER PARRIKAR: Two years' rule of the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar though rocked with several controversies, yet the state made a steady progress, particularly on the financial front. DESILTING OF RIVER SAL: Water Resources Department has sanctioned Rs.58 lakh for desilting a part of river Sal from Mungul to Khareband. (GT)

BEATING UP OF A MINOR BOY: Merciless beating of a minor boy--Ishwar Singh (17)--illegal confinement in police custody, gross violations of human rights and Supreme Court guidelines, by unidentified personnel from the Panjim police station, is being probed by the CID/Crime Branch, on the instructions of Deputy Inspector General of Police Karnal Singh. Ishwar had been picked up by the police on Monday, on a vague reference to a theft of a gold chain by a St Inez resident. (H)

TOPPLING GAMES: The city was agog with speculation about an imminent toppling of the BJP government on the eve of its completing two years in office today. (GT)

USE KADAMBA PLATEAU FOR DUMPING: Even as the garbage disposal crisis is deepening, the State government has neglected the aspect of acquisition of land for alternate sitea stone quarry admeasuring 33,000 sq m at the Kadamba plateau. (GT)

BSNL'S CELLULAR SERVICE LAUNCHED: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited launched its cellular service in Goa on Wednesday with a promise to provide value-added product with a reasonable tariff, which it claims will attract even the common man. It will cover 32,000 connections by March 2003 for Goa. (H)

BAUXITE MINING OPPOSED: Pernem residents are gearing up to oppose the prospecting for bauxite in Mopa and surrounding villages following an order by the Bombay High Court at Goa. The government had granted permission in 1991 to the project, but any further development was stalled by stiff opposition from the villagers, who feared devastation in the village. (GT)

REQUEST TO BAN GUTKHA: The Goa Cancer Society will impress upon the State government to introduce a "Maharashtra-like" ban on the manufacture, sale, storage or distribution of gutkha, joint secretary of the society Dr Shekhar Salkar informed. (H)

HOUSE RAZED: An 80-year-old widow, Caitana Fernandes, has virtually found herself thrown on the road after he small house was flattened by some persons at Dicarpale-Davorlim on Monday morning, when the widow was sitting just outside her house. (H)

THEFT IN NAVELIM: Two unknown persons after entering the house of Maria Lurdes Rodrigues at Firguluem-Navelim, decamped with an ivory image worth Rs.40,000. (NT)

DECOMPOSED BODY FOUND: A male body was found in a decomposed condition in the Mandovi river near a resort at Verem at 8.30 am on Wednesday. (H)

MAN HANGS TO DEATH: A 50-year-old man, Bapu Lako Dahifode, committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence at Unnanna-Molcornedm on Wednesday. (H)

DRIVER KILLED: A 56-year-old tractor driver Sadruddin Yussuf Shaikh, from the zonal agriculture Department in Valpoi, was killed on the spot when the tractor fell off the bridge at Dabose-Sattari on Wednesday morning. (H)

FN FOCUS ON CABLE TV: Friday Balcao, the fortnightly discussion event, on 25 October will feature the topic "Problems faced by Cable TV Subscribers" and the need for joint action to deal with the problems faced by the subscribers. (GT)

BASILICA PHONE CHANGE: The phone number of Bom Jesus Basilica at Old Goa will be changed from 286390 to 285790 from October 25. (GT)

GOAN ROADS ARE DEATH TRAPS: Goans, by now, are so habituated to reading reports of fatal accidents in local newspapers that they have ceased to take cognizance. They have learnt by experience that there is no point in protesting against such accidents, even expressing concern because authorities concerned appear to be totally indifferent. FUTERS HONOURED: Dave Futers, who has been helping schools and school teachers in Goa in computer education, was presented with a Community Award at a luncheon at the Commonwealth Institute in London, for helping youngsters, especially from the deprived communities, to engage in sailing as a sport and as a means of enganging with other like minded folk. FOOTBALL COMMENTATOR PASSES AWAY: Famous football commentator Mousinho Jeremias Fernandes (Benaum) died in the early hours of October 22 at a hospital in Mapusa, following a brief illness. The Konkani commentator was 58. Born in Aldona, he worked in the PWD before retirement, and was an ardent lover of football and a player himself. He began his stint as a commentator with the All India Radio in 1970. He leaves behind his wife Anacleta and son Jim Agnelo. (H)

UZBEK STRIKER FOR DEMPO: Dempo Sports Club hope to solve their perennial striking woes with the signing of Uzbekistan's former internationals striker Andreev Sergey. (H)
