MOTHER, TWO KIDS JUMP INTO A WELL: A housewife along with her two
daughters, jumped into a well in Poinguinim, late evening on October 22.
The names of the deceased were given as Suganda Pagi (35), Prajakta (5) and
Bhakti (3). The husband of the deceased, Mr Chandrakant Pagi is working as
a head constable at the Canacona police station. The police are of the
opinion that the deceased must have taken the tragic step out of
frustration as the younger daughter was not keeping in good health. (NT)
2 END LIFE: A 35-year-old womanLakshmi Laxman Gaonkar of Usgaopoured
kerosene and burnt herself allegedly due to harassment from her husband. In
another case, 35-year-old Narayan Umesh Gaude of Kundaim allegedly
committed suicide by hanging himself to the ceiling at his residence. (NT)
STRAY DOGS, CATTLE MENACE: The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services
yesterday formulated a scheme to tackle the menace of stray cattle and dogs
in the State. The services of private contractors will be engaged to
control stray cattle. Cattle found on the national highways and at tourist
spots will be impounded and will be kept at the Kalay Farms. (GT)
BODY RECOVERED: The body of 19-year-old Keegan Fernandes, a civil
engineering student who had allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the
water at Rua de Ourem creek in Panjim, was recovered by the fire brigade
personnel. (GT)
DEEPA'S STRUGGLE: Ms Deepa Murkunde, who preferred courting arrest after
being charged for urinating in a public office, rather than pay a measly
fine, said, "The lat time I went to Aguada jail, was during the
pre-Liberation era, to meet my uncle, who was a freedom fighter…Today, my
daughter met me in prison, because I had to fight for basic amenities," she
said while speaking at a function organised by the Goa People's Forum.
"What is the use of my Masters degree, my being an author, if I cannot get
a few toilets cleaned by the authorities?" she questioned. (H)
GOA MANAGEMENT SERVICE: Eminent Goan scholar, Dr Vishwanath P Panandikar,
has favoured the creation of a Special Administrative Cadre or what he
called as Goa Management Service for Goa which will be flexible enough to
meet the needs of the changing times. (H)
"PERFORM OR PERISH": The Porvorim Residents Welfare Association yesterday
staged demonstrations in front of the main cable service providerSonali
cablesand demanded better facilities, improvement in the picture quality,
more channels and uniform rates. Juino de Souza, the secretary, said that
the Association would make alternate arrangements through the latest
optical fibre cable technology and provide connections to all residents
residing on the Porvorim plateau at reduced rates and on no profit no loss
basis if the operators do not improve their services. (GT)
PROVIDENT FUND SCAM: The 10,000-odd Goan seafarers community and their
familieswho have been contributing significantly to the State's
development, has appealed to the chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, to take
up the case of the Seamen's Provident Fund scam of Rs.100 crore with the
Prime Minister. Facing uncertain times due to the massive financial
irregularity, the Goan seafarers like their counterparts elsewhere, will be
observing October 25 as a Protest Day. (H)
CHEQUE TO MUSEUM OF CHRISTIAN ARTS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar
yesterday presented a cheque of Rs.3 lakh towards the security expenditure
of the Museum of Christian Arts, Old Goa, at a simple function organised at

PLASTIC BAGS SEIZED: The Panaji Municipal Council, working in tandem with
People's Movement for Civic Action and Goa Foundation, seized a huge stash
of 150 kg of plastic bags from a dealer, located near the Secretariat

"FEARS SEEM VINDICATED": The Cortalim MLA and UGDP General Secretary,
Matanhy Saldanha, has said that the peoples' fears of pollution that would
be caused by the Meta Strips factory at Cortalim-Sancoale appears to be
coming true. Expressing serious concern over the fate of the people living
in the vicinity of the factory, Saldanha said that people have complained
of unusual change in the taste and colour of the well water. (H)
HOUSING PLOTS AT CAMURLIM, CUNCOLIM: The Goa Housing Board has decided to
develop plots at Camurlim and Cuncolim and to acquire land at Dhargalim. It
will also construct 30 flats at Porvorim. (GT)
CROPS HIT IN CANACONA: Zonal Agricultural Officer Amancio Fernandes has
stated that paddy crops in three panchayats of Canacona taluka have been
severely affected, while the remaining four panchayats have been moderately
affected due to the poor monsoons this year. (H)
DOG SHOW AT CAMPAL: Dog owners will be given an opportunity to allow their
pedigreed pooches to strut their stuff at the second Indian National Kennel
Club dog show to held at Campal in Panjim on 24 November. (GT)
KR WINTER HOLIDAY SPECIALS: To clear the extra rush during the coming
holiday season Konkani Railway will run holiday special trains, in co
-ordination with the Western Railway. (GT)
TOURISM AWARD FOR GOA: The Goa tourism department delegation, which
participated in the 8th International Trade Fair four Tourism in Moscow
from October 16 to 19, won a special award for the best activity at the
exhibition for promotion of Goa as a tourist destination from among, 1,729
participants representing 80 odd countries. (NT)
SLICE OF THE TOURISM CAKE: With the new Siolim-Chopdem bridge bringing the
beaches of Pernem within easy reach, people along the shoreline of Pernem
taluka are hoping to finally relish a larger slice of the Goan tourism
cake. They expect a boost in tourism to boost local business and to provide

DEVELOPMENT IN CURTORIM: Despite having a rich tourism potential, a lake at
Radoi ward in Curtorim, popularly known as Radoitollem, craves for
attention of the Tourism Department. The lake is ideal for water sports

PORTUGUESE EXPORTS TO INDIA: Dr Teresa Moreira, the Director General of
International Economic Relations, Ministry of Economy, government of
Portugal, said in Panjim that though political economic ties between India
and European Union are significant, with 3 Indu-EU summits having taken
place so far, the Portuguese exports to India are below 2 per cent of the
