NERI'S BROTHER-IN-LAW DROWNS IN TIVIM: A boat ride in a rivulet at Ganvoim in Tivim ended in a tragedy on Friday evening, when 28-year-old Sanyo Fernandes of Sirlim and brother-in-law of Water Resources Minister Felipe Neri Rodrigues, drowned, while five others, including four girls were rescued from the river. BLACK BUCKS: The Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary has a new addition to its animal flock Black Bucks (Antelope cervicapra), to add beauty and enhance the tourist attraction to the zoo as well. (H)

KAKINADA-GOA GAS PIPELINE: The multi-crore Reliance group, which has recently struck huge reserves of natural gas in the Krishna-Godavari basis on Andhra Pradesh, has indicated that it will take up laying of pipeline from Kakinada to Goa via Hyderabad, covering Warangal, Khammam and other backward regions in Telangana. THIEVES FAVOUR: Did you know that burglars' favorite modus operandi to effect entry into houses and flats is by breaking the main door? Or that in the case of vehicle thefts, the culprits generally target Hero Honda motorcycles. Statistics compiled by the district police do point towards that position. (H)

DEMAND FOR NEW MARKET: City-based NGO, Margao First, has called for constructing a new market complex with adequate toilets, canteen and resting facilities after demolishing the existing structure of Gandhi market here and urged the Margao Municipal Council to take immediate steps to improve the civic amenities around the Gandhi market complex. SUICIDE IN XELDEM: A 33-year-old man, Martin Carvalho, from Karegal-Xeldem committed suicide by jumping into a well on Friday evening. (H)

WOMAN DIES OF BURN INJURIES: The deputy controller of civil defence, Ms Ganga Dinesh (39), residing at Saloi-Porvorim, succumbed to burn injuries. The deceased had sustained 80 per cent burn injuries while attempting to light the garbage dump after sweeping the house and surrounding areas at around 10.30 pm yesterday. (NT)

AT YOUR OWN RISK: The trauma unit was started at the Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim, over a year ago with good intentions. Today doctors at the hospital quietly advise friends, relations and VIPs not to step into the unit. The reason as one doctor put it: "The recovery of a patient once he lands up in the TU cannot be guaranteed." (GT)

MARKET COMPLEX FOR CANSAULIM, CORTALIM: Modern market complexes have been assured for the villages of Cansaulim and Cortalim. This was announced by the Cortalim MLA, Mathany Saldanha. (H)

NEEDS PROTECTION: In what can be termed as the greatest mockery of archaeology, the Pandava caves situated near St Sebastian Church in Aquem, Margao, are used as dust bins and sometimes as urinals. And this is being done despite the fact that the site is declared as a protected monument by the State archives and archaeological department. (Rupesh Samant in NT)

I T AND BIO-TECH: A Corporate Summit 2002 on Information Technology and Bio-Technology organised by International Centre, Goa, will be held at its premises at Dona Paula on 10 and 11 November. Speaking to reporters, Advisor, E-Governance and IT to Government of Goa, Dr Anupam Saraph, said Goa can focus on becoming a research and development hub as research in IT and BT is emerging as a front-ranking trend setter. BENAULIM SARPANCH: The first no-confidence motion along the Salcete coastal belt was filed yesterday against 10-month-old Benaulim Sarpanch Guilhermina Leitao. Trevor Pinto (deputy Sarpanch), Maria Mendes, Carmelina Fernandes, Diella Pereira, Menino Fernandes and Ajay Karekar, who had supported her for the seat in January, have moved the motion. (GT)

WOODSTOCK IN GOA: The tourism department is keen on holding "Woodstock" albeit with a variationnot just music but a dance festivalwith some international artistes and Indian musicians in Goa in March next year. (GT)

MERCES FEAST: The parishioners will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Merces on November 10, with the feast mass at 9.30 am. In the evening a Konkani drama "Mhoji Maim Mhoji Dusman" will be staged. (H)

VARCA FEAST: Villagers of Varca will be celebrating the feast of their patron Our Lady of Gloria tomorrow. This church was built more than 300 years ago on 23 May 1635 by European Jesuits. Legend says that when it was decided to build the church, all the "Gaonkars" from the village toiled for day and night. On completion they took "Our Lady of Gloria" as their patron. (GT)

DEELIP SARDESAI TO SPEAK: Deelip Sardesai, the first Goan cricketer to play for India and the first Indian to score a double century outside India, will speak at a vocational guidance programme organised by Shri Sadanand Zambaulikar Memorial Trust, Margao, on 10 November. (GT)

CHENDVANKAR'S PAINTINGS: The exhibition of paintings by Prof Sadguru Chendvankar, lecturer, Goa College of Art, will be organised by Kala Academy in its Art Gallery from November 9 to 14. All the paintings have been cautioned by Vishnu Wagh. (H)

TELEPHONE NUMBER CHANGED: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has announced that all the telephone numbers in Goa will have seven digits from November 10 midnight. The service equipment at the exchange is being upgraded to meet the requirements. All the customers are requested to prefix 2 to their existing telephone numbers. (NT)
