"SUPARI KILLERS" INVOLVED: A major breakthrough in the murder of Murli
Parab at Old Goa, in the first week of October, is likely with the police
zeroing in on a gang of five professional killers also suspected to be
involved in a murder in South Goa. Paresh Amburle of Khed Ratnagiri, an
accomplice of the gold smugglers from Bangalore, has revealed that the five
persons often met in a city hotel in Panaji, where he was residing for
about four months with a cabaret dancer from Bangalore. (GT)
STABBED IN MAPUSA: A fast-food stall owner, Romeo Braganza (40) of
Angod-Mapusa, was allegedly stabbed by Rupesh Salgaonkar (24) of Guirim in
broad daylight near Cine Alanrkar in Mapusa. According to eye-witnesses,
the accused, who appears mentally unsound, stood at the spot and waited
till the Mapusa police was summoned. (H)
WOMAN FOUND DEAD: A 54-year-old lady, Ms Liberatta Wiggins from Gaumvaddi,
Anjuna, was found dead in the shallow creek near the Anjuna Tintto at
around 1.30 pm on November 24. (NT)
GERMAN ARRESTED: The Pernem police arrested a 39-year-old German national,
Manfred Michael, with 85 grammes of charas at Junasvaddo, Mandrem, at
around 2.15 pm on November 25. (NT)
SNAKE CATCHER RELEASED: Lawrence Rodrigues, who was arrested by the Colva
Police on Saturday, was released on bail as per the directions of the
Sub-division Magistrate on November 24. (NT)
INVESTMENT WORTH RS.85 CRORE: The High Powered Co-ordination Committee has
cleared two industrial units last week, which would bring in an investment
of Rs.85 crore and generate employment for nearly 350 people, according to
Industries minister Ramrao Dessai. The two projects are: Dr Reddy's
Laboratories, Hyderabad, at Verna Industrial Estate, and Goa Sponge &
Power Limited, a steel manufacturing unit, at Dharbandora. (NT)
GUIRDOLIM DEMAND FULL-TIME SECY: The villagers of village panchayat of
Guirdolim in their gram sabha meeting have demanded a full-fledged
panchayat secretary to speed up the pending work. At present, only a
part-time secretary services this panchayat, due to which they face extreme
difficulty in obtaining NOCs and other important documents from the

AG THALI'S APPOINTMENT: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay high Court has
suggested to the government that the notification appointing Advocate Vilas
P Thali to the post of Additional Advocate General be withdrawn, following
confirmation by the State government that a sum of Rs.1.12 lakh has been

UGDP FOR JUDICIAL PROBE: The United Goans Democratic Party has demanded a
judicial inquiry into the entire DySP ShirishThorat episode. It has been
stated by UGDP secretary general Anacleto Viegas that in the superficial
inquiry into the controversy of the alleged wrongful acts of the DySP, the
offence committed by the hotel against a helpless woman ought not to go

BOMB SCARE DELAYS TRAIN: The Delhi-Bound "Goa Express" train was delayed by
nearly and hour on November 25 afternoon at the Margao Railway Station
after any anonymous called informed the police in Margao of a bomb in the
train. The call alter turned out to be a hoax. (H)
COP INSULTS SENIORS: A police constable, attached to the Porvorim police
station, received a rude jolt when he found that the two persons in an

MAN DIES IN MISHAP: A motorcycle rider, Mahesh Naik, was killed on the spot
and his pillion rider was seriously inured when their vehicle dashed
against a tanker near GVM College, Farmagudi, at 8.30 am on November 25. (NT)
ANCIENT TEMPLE: A temple dating back to the Kadamba period in the
submergence area of the proposed Tillari Irrigation Project at Patiye in
Maharashtra, offers much scope for a study of Goa's past history and
cultural links. While temples built by Kadambas existing in Karnataka
confirm that their rule extended beyond Goa's present borders, the
existence of this temple complex in Maharashtra will perhaps add another

ailments through Yoga is Mr Narayan Ratwad from Mapusa. "Practice Yoga for
one hour every day and feel refreshed for the remaining 23 hours," says

HANGS HIMSELF: Sandeep Laxman Dessai, of Valkini in Sanguem, committed
suicide by hanging himself to the roof of a cattle shed. The deceased was
reportedly in love with a girl from his locality. The opposition to their
marriage from the parents might have led him to take the extreme step, the

SUICIDE ON BARGE: Suresh Anant Salgaonkar (50), of St Estevam-Marcela,
committed suicide by hanging himself with a nylon rope to the roof of the
iron-ore carrying barge "Sneha V" on which he was working. (GT)
ANNIVERSARY OF ST THOMAS' ARRIVAL: While the 450th death anniversary of St
Francis Xavier preoccupied the Catholic community in the state, not many
may be aware that the Church in India last week celebrated the 1950th
anniversary of the arrival of St Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus
Christ, to India. The two-day programme, which began on November 16, was
organised by the Ernakulam-Kerala by the Catholic Bishops Conference of
India along with the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council. (H)

ROBERTO ALVARES PASSES AWAY: Well-known Goan entertainer and president of
Clube Vasco-da-Gama, Roberto Alvares, passed away following a massive
cardiac attack at his residence in Panaji, on the afternoon of November 25.
He was 52. During the span of the last 25 years, Roberto introduced several
creative concepts in Goa's entertainment industry, including the famous
Red-n-Black during Carnival. (NT)
