TWO KILLED IN MISHAPS: Fatima Fernandes e D'Costa (45) sustained head injuries and died on the spot in an accident which occurred at Nuvem on Saturday. She fell down from the Bullet motorcycle which collided with a scooter. In another accident near the Verna Post Office on Friday night, Francis X Fernandes (22) of Cortalim, succumbed to injuries after a collision between his bullet motorcycle and a Vespa scooter. The Vespa rider, Francisco M Fernandes from Seraulim has been admitted in the GMC with serious injuries. (H)

"LEGALISE MATKA": At a meeting called by Azad Goenkar Kranti Sena's president, Anil Naik, in Porvorim yesterday, around 180 matka agents came together to demand the legalisation of the activity. Naik said that those against matka should take a closer look at other illegal activities like sex trade, liquor bars, etc. He argued: "If computerized on-line lotteries can be legal then why not matka?" DOLPHIN PROJECT MOOTED: The idea of setting up a dolphin show project has been mooted by Mr Valentino Vaz, a local businessman who fascinated by his experience of seeing dolphin shows abroad, has collected data on dolphins and has handed it over to the state authorities to study the feasibility of setting up such a project in the State. POOR WORKING CONDITIONS FOR KIDS: Nearly 55 per cent of the working children do so in "bad" work places with safe drinking water unavailable and 45 per cent have no access to toilet facilities. Some 40 per cent of these kids work for eight to ten hours a day and 70 per cent have no rest period, revealed a survey done by Child Rights Cell of the All India Trade Union Congress on 250 children working on beaches, domestic construction sites, hotels, fishing industry, tourism industry and other areas. SOCIAL SECURITY FOR SEX WORKERS: The State government is toying with the idea of providing a complete social security cover to the commercial sex workers in the State, particularly those in the red light area of Baina in a bid to motivate them to give up the flesh trade once and for all. This idea is yet in a preliminary stage, announced Health minister Dr Suresh Amonkar yesterday. (WE-GT)

FOOL-PROOF PANCHANAMAS: Experts from the Narcotics Control Bureau and a public prosecutor delved deep in the technical discrepancies, which at times crop up while drawing up of an on-scene panchanama, at a seminar organised at the International Centre at Dona Paula. (H)

FROM SONSODO TO RIVONA: The garbage problem at Sonsodo is likely to abate with Urban Development Minister, Digamber Kamat, in principle having sanctioned Rs.25 lakh for the work of moving, lime, building waste and manure from Sonsodo to Cupa-Rivona. (WE-GT)

GOVT MAY TURN TO BANGALORE: The government might as well turn to the garden City, Bangalore, also known for the IT industry, for consultancy on various infrastructural needs and public utility services such as garbage disposal and sanitation. Indications to this effect became apparent after the three-member committee of chief officersGokuldas P Naik, Sanjit Rodrigues and Agnelo Fernandes--of municipal bodies returned home after visiting Bangalore. BISHOPS MEET: The Bishops of the Catholic Church of the western region comprising the dioceses of Goa, Masharashtra and Gujarat will hold a two-day Bishops conference at Pilar today (Dec 1). Some of the topics to be taken up are: the importance of marriage preparation, family movements/associations as support structures, parish family cell, mixed marriage, care of spouses/children in broken marriages. LADY MISSING: A 58-year-old lady, Philomena R D'Mello, a resident of Mumbai has been missing. She was last spotted near the Mapusa Garden. (H)

KBM CONDOLES ROBIN VAZ'S DEMISE: Konkani Bhasha Mandal has expressed grief over the sad demise of veteran stage artist and singer Robin Vaz. Late Vaz made his debut on the Konkani stage at 20 years. A true Goan, who devoted his life for the Konkani stage, he was seen acting in a Konkani tiatr 15 days before his death. (WE-GT)

"GOVT SHOULD NOT HURT PUBLIC FEELINGS": In a press statement issued in Panjim, the Cortalim MLA, Matanhy Saldanha, while welcoming the government decision to restore status quo on public holidays for 2003, has urged the government not to hurt the sensibilities of any section of the Goan society. MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT COCONUT OIL: "Coconut oil is suitable for all types of cooking as it does not transform into trans-fatty acids upon hating. It also contains natural antioxidants that give it the longest shelf life as compared to other vegetable oils. Hence foods fried in coconut oil have better shelf life."
