DIVERSIFY FROM TOURISM: While describing Goa to be the second fastest
growing State in the country, Credit Rating Information Services of India
Ltd (CRISIL), country's top credit rating agency, has said that Goa should
diversify from the tourism section on which its economy is over dependent.
MD and CEO of CRISIL, Mr R Ravimohan, stated this in his presentation on "A
perspective of State finances of western region", at a function held under
the auspices of the Confederation of Indian Industries, Goa Council, at
Marriott in Panjim. (H)
GOVT WORKFORCE: Reacting to a query during the CRISIL presentation, Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar went on to state that he had reduced the
workforce (government) from 44,000 to 42,000. "What is also very important
is the quality of the manpower," he remarked. (H)
VACANCIES FOR 1,000 POSTS: The Goa cabinet on December 13 cleared some
1,000 posts to be filled in the new few months through the pre-employment
training scheme route. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the bulk
of these posts will be in the police department (100 constables and 15
PSIs), fire services (100 firemen), education department (200 primary
teachers and 50 assistant teachers) and the forest and excise department. (H)
E-GOVERNANCES BY JAN 26: Briefing reporters after the State cabinet
meeting, the Chief Minister said that the government was initially trying
to link 20 departments to the Goa-net-work, the main server which would be
installed at the State Secretariat. The Goa Intra-net will be operated by
taking a leased line from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. (NT)
PI'S DAUGHTER STONED: PI Sandesh Chodankar of Porvorim police quarters in a
complaint to the Porvorim Police has claimed that PSI MP Naik (who has been
deemed a deserter) and his son Pravin stoned his 5-year-old daughter
Sabrina at 5.30 pm on December 13.
FRESH FUNDS FOR BANK OF GOA: The Chief Minister said on December 13 that
the State government has so far provided a financial assistance to the tune
of Rs.18 crore in various forms to the Bank of Goa (Mapusa Urban
Co-operative Bank) for saving the premier co-operative bank from sinking. (NT)
CASE AGAINST DUPING: The Economic Offences Wing, Panaji, yesterday
registered a case against the directors of M/s Sanchayani Savings and
Investments (I) Limited on the charge of duping investors in the State. (GT)
KONKANI ESSENTIAL: CM Manohar Parrikar said yesterday the knowledge of
Konkani pre-condition for employment in government need not be satisfied
only by "certification". He asserted that the knowledge of Konkani
continues to be "essential" for employment. (H)
CYBERAGE SCHEME: The Chief Minister launched the unique Cyberage Students
Scheme in the presence of Sports Minister Mickky Pacheco at Betalbatim
yesterday. Initially five 11 Science students from Benaulim area were given
computers by the Chief Minister. Nearly 3,000 eleventh std science students
from Goa will be covered under the scheme by providing computers. (NT)
PANCH DUPES YOUTH: Michael Rodrigues, a panch of Ambelim, is in big trouble
for allegedly having cheated three youths with a promise of giving jobs in
Kuwait, according to a complaint filed with the police by Jaywant Dias and
Socorro Fernandes from Ambelim and Roque D'Souza of Baga-Velim. (GT)
DRUG COURIER IN NC NET: Anti-Narcotics Cell sleuths arrested one of the
hundreds of Manali-Goa drug couriers at Chapora, seizing charas worth
Rs.1.2 lakh approximately. Once winter hits the Kulu Manali region,
hundreds of couriers descend southwards, with the western coastline being
one of the hot destinations. The value of charas in Goa is about 10 times
more than the original cost. (H)
ONE SUCCUMBS: Martin Fernandes, 60, resident of Altinho-Panaji, succumbed
to severe injuries at the Goa Medical College Hospital yesterday. Fernandes
had suffered serious head injuries after he was hit by a speeding
motorcycle, while crossing the road near the Customs House on Monday night.

WORKSHOP ON WORK CULTURE: A state-level workshop of work culture was
organised by the Post Graduate Department of Psychology, St Xavier's
College, Mapusa, recently. (GT)
DEARNESS RELIEF TO PENSIONERS: The government has sanctioned dearness
relief to government pensioners/family pensioners in view of rise in the
cost of living beyond average consumer price index 306.33 (as of January 1,
1996) at the rate of 52% with effect from July 1, 2002, based on grant of
Dearness Relief to Central Government Pensioners and Pensioners of All
India services. (H)
GOAN NRI CONVENTION: A convention of overseas Goans, organised by the NRI
Facilitation Centre, will be held on December 29 at the Kala Academy,
Panjim, to discuss issues pertaining to Goan non-resident Indians spread
all over the world. Participation in the convention will be by

BARS WILL REMAIN OPEN ON CHRISTMAS EVE: Bars and restaurants, including
five-star hotels in the State have the option to keep the premises open on
the Christmas and New Year eve beyond the prescribed hours, on payment of
prescribed fees well in advance. (H)
ENTRY FEE ON CASINOS LIKELY: CM Parrikar said that his government is
thinking of imposing an entry fee on the casinos operating in the State. He
said that entry fee to casinos would fetch Rs.4 to 5 crore per annum. This
may deter the students, who are reportedly going to the casinos, he felt. (H)
AGONDA SHACKS BURNED: Canacona police has arrested three suspectsJohn
Fernandes, Brasilio Fernandes and Anthony Fernandes, all from Agondain
connection with the incident of settling ablaze three of the seven tourists
shacks, owned by Dr Shamba Gaonkar at the Agonda beach. (H)
PICNIC ENDS IN TRAGEDY: A college picnic ended in tragedy when a
20-year-old youth, Sachin Naik, from Pirna-Bardez drowned in the Arabian
Sea off Arambol on Friday evening. (H)
DUTCH NATIONAL BOOKED: Pernem police has registered a case against a Dutch
tourist, Francisus, on charges of trespassing into a prawn hatchery,
belonging to Devendra Deshprabhu, at Paliem-Pernem on Friday. (H)
GAURI'S STUDIO POTTERY: The exhibition of Studio Pottery done by artist
Gauri Divan will be inaugurated on December 19 at RUST, Fort Aguada Road,
Candolim. The lovely work will be on display till December 22 from 10.30 am
to 7.30 pm.
