PARRIKAR URGES NRIS' ROLE IN GOA'S PROGRESS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday stated that efforts will be made to register all NRIs irrespective of caste, creed of religion, to enlist their participation in the development of the State. Parrikar was speaking as chief guest after inaugurating the day-long Overseas Goans Convention organised by the NRI Goa Facilitation Centre at Kala Academy, Panaji. Referring to the registration of about 500 NRIs with the facilitation centre despite the presence of nearly one lakh NRIs, the chief minister said that the first phase of registering them was over. He said non-resident Indians have good potential to participate in the development of the State but their issue had not been addressed properly till now. (GT)

GIVE US GOOD INFRASTRUCTURE: Sunday's gatheringOverseas Goan Convention organised by the NRI Goa Facilitation Centre at Kala Akademy in Panjimwas the fourth annual event of its kind. It was smaller than earlier years' gatherings, but organisers argued that this event was qualitatively different in that it had the official State government backing. Earlier in the day, the limited number of expatsmingling with a larger crowd of officials and local participantsheard out what was being offered to them. Banks, insurance companies and other institutions made offers to attract expat interest…But expats voiced their concern over the way in which things were sliding, and sharply voiced their need for a fair deal. NRI GOANS WANT HASSLE-FREE GOVT: The representatives of various associations of Non-Resident Indians of Goan origin on December 29 expressed their willingness to invest in the State and turn it into a model for other states but for this the Goa administration should be more transparent in its approach and must adopt a responsive attitude. VAJPAYEE IN GOA: Prime Minister Atal behari Vajpayee arrive on a four-day visit to Goa yesterday afternoon. The Prime Minister and his entourage was accorded a warm welcome at the INS Hansa Naval airport, Vasco. (GT)

DABOLIM AIRPORT TO BE RENOVATED: In order to give boost to tourism in India and air traffic in Goa, the Central government has decided to renovate the existing Dabolim airport and extend another terminal there. This was informed by Union Minister for Civil Aviation Shahnawaz Hussein at Dabolim airport yesterday. Hussein stated that passengers from Gulf countries and other neighbouring countries prefer Goa as a tourism sport as compared to western countries. (NT)

RAVE PARTIES GO ON: Are "rave parties' being organised to fund the construction and maintenance of religious places? According to sources in the Anjuna area, a number of organisers of illegal parties in the area profess to be raising funds for the construction or renovation of religious buildings. Residents say that they find it harder to sleep each day with parties blatantly violating laws on sound. Speaking to Gomantak Times the police claimed that their hands are tied and allege that they have been instructed not to interfere in any way with the parties. (GT)

BULLET TRAIN MAY TRAVEL UPTO PANVEL: A confident looking Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd managing director Mr B Rajaram, said on December 28 that the fast speed train linking Mumbai to Goa is a dream not far from being fulfilled. Mr Rajaram said that instead of Roha, the train would be destined for Panvel, further reducing the distance between Goa and Mumbai. (NT)

SECURITY CARDS FOR LABOURERS: The Government of India has chosen Goa as the pilot state for launching the scheme to cove unorganized labourers under social security, with facilities including health services and pension being accorded to them. (NT)

MAN WITH CHARAS HELD: The Anti-Narcotic police yesterday arrested Yellappa Chalwadi of Ganesh Path, Hubli, and recovered from him 725 grammes of charas valued at Rs.72,500 in the international market. (GT)

4 KERALITES HELD: Four women from Kerala were arrested by Maina-Curtorim police in connection with the theft of a gold chain belonging to one Florina Fernandes from Chandor on December 28. (H)

NEW POWER LINE FOR MARGAO: Come Monday and the third source of power supply to Margao city will finally become a reality. This line will provide alternate power supply to Margao as it is connected to the Reliance-Salgaocar power project at Sancoale. (H)

RESEARCH GRANTS: Departments of Chemistry, Marine Science & Biotechnology, Earth Science and Mathematics, Goa University, have been selected by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, for Funds for Improvement of Science & Technology Infrastructure in Universities programme. RSPCL'S SOCIAL WORK: PVC roofing shelter for the porch at the entrance of church of Our Leady of Health, Sancoale, was declared open to the parishioners in the presence of Cortalim MLA Mathany Saldanha, panchayat and parish council members recently. This shelter was constructed by Reliance Salgaocar Power Company for the church as a part of their policy of contributing towards community welfare. (GT)
