Accident cases on the rise across the state.
---------------------------------------------------------
by Shyam Zambauliker

Despite efforts made by the traffic police to inculcate principles of road safety
in drivers, this year has seen an increase in the number of fatal and minor
accidents. As many as 192 fatal and 492 minor accidents were registered
in Goa till December 22 which claimed the lives of several persons.

During the same period last year 172 fatal accidents and 345 minor accidents
had occurred which as compared to this year were less in number.
As per information available from the police, South Goa saw 86 fatal and
216 minor accidents. The police said that 79 fatal and 210 minor cases
were detected.

In North Goa in all 106 fatal and 276 minor accidents occurred as compared
to 102 fatal and 186 minor during the corresponding period last year.
Out of the 106 life taking accidents 96 were detected. The same period last
year saw 88 major and 182 minor accident cases being detected.

The traffic scenario of Margao sub-division was not very different then what
it was last year. In all 75 persons succumbed to road mishaps within a
span of ten months this year in Quepem and Margao sub-divisions while over
200 persons were injured in other minor accidents.

In Margao and Quepem sub-divisions 57 fatal accidents occurred which
claimed the lives of these 75 persons while 140 minor accidents were reported
injuring over 200 persons. A total of 15 fatal and 37 minor accidents were reported
at Canacona, Sanguem, Curchorem and Quepem till November 2, 2002.
Out of 15 fatal cases 14 were detected and the persons involved arrested,
while one hit and run case is pending investigation.

Again out of above 15 fatal accidents 5 each were reported at Curchorem and
Quepem while 4 and 1 respectively were reported at Canacona and Sanguem.
The police also detected 36 out of the 37 minor accidents reported in the said
area. In comparison to the same period last year 15 fatal accidents were
reported in this jurisdiction, all of which were detected. Similarly, last year saw
34 minor accidents.

In the Margao sub-division, covering Margao, Maina-Curtorim, Colva and Cuncolim
42 fatal accidents were reported of which 38 were detected and 4 are pending
investigation. At Margao, the commercial center of South Goa in all 14 fatal
accidents occurred. Compared to it last year during same period in all 28 fatal
accidents were reported and 26 were detected while 71 minor accidents were
reported and 68 were solved. Of the 28 fatal accidents 10 were reported in
the jurisdiction of Maina-Curtorim police station while 5 each were reported
at Colva and Cuncolim. The remaining 8 fatal accidents were reported at
Margao.

It is pertinent to note that out of 71 minor accidents 27 alone were reported
at Maina-Curtorim. The traffic scenario of Margao sub-division is not going
to improve in the new year unless concerned authorities attack the problem
at roots said one citizen. He said that there is total chaos on traffic front
due to the absence of planning and lack of concern on the part of government
agencies.

A traffic police inspector said that scooterists, trucks, mini buses and
motorcyclists were the worst road offenders constituting the
largest number of road accidents.
