First, I assure you that both the "as root" and "as user" tests were done using the same command line:
startx -- -config xorg.conf.hdboot And that the "as root" works, and the "as user" doesn't. The huge surprise is, that when I took your suggestion and copied xorg.conf.hdboot to /System/Settings/X11/xorg.conf (*and* the symlink to /Programs/Xorg-App/Settings/X11), NOW X works for the ordinary user. In response to your next question, about the keyboard vs PowerTOP: cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/product Razer BlackWidow Ultimate USB Optical Mouse EHCI Host Controller UHCI Host Controller (repeated 3 more times) The Razer is the keyboard I have plugged into this system.
