There are things you can do which will ensure that you are always adhering to the protocol of a gentleman when it comes to treating a lady the right way. That way, you can ensure you will never miss an opportunity to treat a lady with courtesy and respect. Step2 Don't get offended if a lady tells you she can open the door for herself or, "I got it." Some ladies have had bad experiences with rude men and boys and prefer to not have similar encounters. Some women feel they are equal to men in every way and want to be treated as such. Step3 Open the door and let her enter first if you and a lady approach a door at the same time. If you see a woman approaching and she is over ten steps away, don't stand there holding the door. Also, if you are ten steps behind her, don't run to get the door. You'll look like a moron. Be a gentleman within normal parameters. Step4 Consider that when you're riding in a car with a lady, whether you are driving or not, you should escort them to their door and open it, then close it once they and the edge of their clothing are inside the car. Once you have arrived at your destination, advise the lady to stay seated and you will come around and open her door. Step5 Let the lady be seated first and order first when out at a restaurant. Step6 Know that if you invite her out to dinner, you should pay. If she invites you out to dinner, make sure you establish ahead of time who will pay. It's not necessarily appropriate to say, "You're the man, so you pay" because women have made the decision to be an equal part of the workforce and they make as much or more money than many men. Step7 Be aware that one of the most difficult decisions you may have to make as a gentleman is whether to get involved when a lady is being physically attacked by a man. Your safety is your priority. You may have a wife and family at home and can't risk involving yourself in a matter that could get you injured or killed. Take charge by asking someone to call the police. Secondly, talk with the man and ask him to stop. Sometimes men get involved in these situations that concern someone else and the woman won't even press charges against the offender.
