The API key serves a couple of purposes. First, it gives Google a way to track 
you down if it needs to contact you for any reason. And second, it is used in 
the dynamic throttling mechanism. If your application will submit a large 
number of requests, assuming that you're complying with the API's TOS (which 
prohibit automated queries), supplying the key will allow you to make more 
requests, more quickly.
