The exact answer to this question depends very much on your particular implementation. For instance, if you're using the standard SearchForm (e.g., in a standard SearchControl), the easiest way would be to write your own getElementsByClassName function and then walk through the returned array to find the input you want. But if you're using a custom form, I would actually recommend assigning your input an id attribute and using document.getElementById to track it down.
