Sadly, I don't know that there's a way to do everything that you're wanting on the webpage without some sort of server-side application going. And the reason for that is that, no matter how you do it on the web page, someone could find the data. What you might do is set up a mailing list or even an LDAP server of some sort that members would gain access to. To be honest, though, I really don't know what I would do. This question isn't really related to the Google APIs or any other area that I've ever experimented with.
As far as the IM question, I'm even more lost. Several IM networks have web-based clients, which could (in theory) be tapped to do what you're wanting to do. The question is, which of them have a publicly documented API that you can do it in a reasonable fashion. I don't know the answer to that. And I honestly don't even know where to point you to find the answer. Jeremy R.
