In the (now-deprecated) Web Search API, there is a way to get the "estimatedResultCount," but it is wildly inaccurate compared to the counts you'll find on google.com and should not be relied on for any mission-critical function. Since you're a professor at a university, you might find more success with the University Research Program for Google Search.
