It's not really a language detection problem. The issue is that the machine translation is really not optimized for single word translations, especially when it has to detect the source language. There are simply too many variables for the system to make an accurate detection. And if you run a number of tests on single words - or even short strings - you'll find that the accuracy is actually rather poor. In fact, there is a threshold of about three words. With *phrases* of at least three words, accuracy jumps dramatically, but one- and two-word strings are really, really hit and miss. Try sending translation requests in phrases of at least three words.
