I have changed to
query.setFilter("tags.contains('" + aTagValue + "')");
 and it still works!

It took me a while to get into this concept, that although it's a
filter clause it's written in java object style and not SQL style, I
mean:
NOT tags contains tagParam BUT  tags.contains(tagParam)   as you wrote
