I just tried GWTTestCase with App Engine enabled in eclipse and didn't get it to work. But you can run the app in eclipse dev mode and use some logging to console and see if your rpc is working or you can tell because the data made it to the client. The eclipse dev hosting mode works pretty much like the production environment although there are a few minor differences.
