You may want to try out the AppEngine Pipeline API, which handles most of the problems of distributing your computational workflow, and allows some sort of synchronization. Please, take a look at it: http://code.google.com/p/appengine-pipeline/. We use it in production and it works like a charm on both Java and Python runtimes.
