If you are sending from local-dev-app-server, then you might be having the same problem I was - see this message: http://groups.google.com/group/google-appengine-python/browse_thread/thread/114baca865d09595#. My problem went away when I ran on the real live Google App Server environment. My dev environment sent an email, but it looks like the headers were all messed up. Never got a resolution for how to solve on dev environment.
