Well at least I can answer that one by myself a little bit: My US dns resolver seems to get "poisoned" from time to time and caches a result that resolved ghs.google.com to an european IP. Google's DNS (8.8.8.8) resolves ghs.google.com to an US IP. Seems to be similiar to the issue at http://groups.google.com/group/google-appengine/browse_thread/thread/7c60b05cca72aaed/1ed189aacc56de66
