If you're on iPhone you can pass a cookie storage to NSURLConnection which will automatically persist the cookies for subsequent requests. Entering the wrong password too many times will lock out the user's account and you'll have to direct the user to some page with a CAPTCHA to unlock it. I'm pretty sure the bulkloader.py script uses this method to authenticate users. This post may help.
