Password
--------
Have you tried the appcfg option "--passin", which I presume allows
the password to be given at launch-time? (I personally do not use this
and just enter my password once after having started the uploading
process.)

Ease of use
-----------
I can only speak for myself, but I find the appcfg upload tool a
doddle to use. I just keep a set of commands to use in a text file,
and copy and paste into my command line window as needed. I have no
problem at all, and the documentation is clear for me.
