You might want to star this issue http://code.google.com/p/googleappengine/issues/detail?id=4189 Once the java version is in place it could then be ported to python.
(As an aside we have an embedded system written in C that polls our app. Having a simple, non-browser based Channels API would be much better for us as well.)
