Whoops - detail missing: This is Python. The code is very complex...I'm not sure how easy it will be to run it outside the DevServer. Is that really the only way to figure this out?

Can you confirm that it runs correctly on your local JVM outside of the DevServer. If not, then this isn't a GAE issue - you need to find out why from your JVM provider.
