I have tried to use the module support in AppEngine to replace a backend. This did not work for me (and others), because the module was never started. I raised the issue on StackOverflow http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17771393/problems-converting-appengine-backend-into-module but did not receive any response from Google.
Next thing I tried was to convert back to the backend solution (which was working before) I was not ablke to de3ploy the backend.
