It looks like you'll need to share some details for troubleshooting. If you'd like to do this privately, you can post an issue to the google-cloud-platform issue tracker <https://code.google.com/p/google-cloud-platform/issues/list>. At minimum, I'd like to see a screen capture of the DNS configuration so we can test and rule out any config issues.
However, when you say you did not make any changes to the default DNS records, that may be the issue. At minimum, you need to set up a CNAME record for the subdomain you want to map (eg. 'www') that points to ghs.google.com, see https://cloud.google.com/appengine/docs/python/console/using-custom-domains-and-ssl.
