This looks like an Android Studio specific error. As a workaround you can simply deploy using the 'gcloud app deploy <https://cloud.google.com/sdk/gcloud/reference/app/deploy>' command in the path location of your module's (now called 'service') app.yaml or appengine-web.xml file.
If the deployment cannot find this configuration file it will result in the error you are experiencing. Just ensure you have the latest GCloud installed by running 'gcloud components update <https://cloud.google.com/sdk/gcloud/reference/components/update>' before deploying. - Note that Google Groups is for general product discussions and not for technical support.
