George, I'd think this has to do with the rule about group owners never being able to relinquish ownership, even if they leave. I quote from the doc<http://code.google.com/googleapps/domain/gdata_provisioning_api_v2.0_developers_protocol.html#Remove_Member_Example> :
*Note:* Removing a group member who is also the group owner will remove the user from the group but will not revoke their group ownership. The removed member will thus remain as a non-member owner of that group.
