  There is no normal GData API that allows full interaction with a Gmail 
mailbox (labels, messages, etc). However, as Philippe shared, you can use 
IMAP along with XOAuth and 2-legged OAuth authentication to access user 
mailboxes without needing to know their password:

you to interact with labels and conversations in a more Gmail-like way.

You can also access Gmail mailboxes via Google Apps Script. See:
