Hi michal, There is no normal GData API that allows full interaction with a Gmail mailbox (labels, messages, etc). However, as Philippe shared, you can use IMAP along with XOAuth and 2-legged OAuth authentication to access user mailboxes without needing to know their password:
http://code.google.com/apis/gmail/oauth/ the link Philippe shared has detailed on Gmail IMAP extensions that allow you to interact with labels and conversations in a more Gmail-like way. You can also access Gmail mailboxes via Google Apps Script.
