I agree that this is not the best user experience but unfortunately there's no other way to obtain the customer ID without 3LO or ClientLogin (which is even less recommended). I'd appreciate if you could add your perspective to the public issue tracker ( http://code.google.com/a/google.com/p/apps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=2312) so that we can track all details of this feature request in a single place.
