yes, google-base is definitely not a relational database.

however, i would say it is efficient -- despite xml being
the underlying data format; primarily because it uses the
same similar technology as google itself.

a few seconds to return 250 items out of over
six-hundred-million "records" isn't too bad.

but with restrictions on updates and features that don't
approach an rdbms in many other areas it appears it's a
mismatch for the application's requirements.
