Maybe you 'd rather use the built-in notification mechanism : google 
calendar can send you email notifications when an event is added by someone 
else (shared calendar) or when an event is about to occur (within the next 
minutes, hours or days ; maybe try with notification 1 day before the event 
occurence).

Of course, this is not a real-time process, but it's easy to code, and it 
avoids flooding Google Calendar for un-necessary polling (sorry to say that, 
but polling is a BAD idea, as when you do some polling with a short time 
interval, it's unlikely there's a new event... but just to have this void 
result, you have to consume some server time, which could be used by other 
users instead).
