Cristian, I'm not sure you'll be able to come up with display logic that will cover all scenarios, but here's how I'd start:
Use the CHXR parameter to manually specify min/max/step values, keeping in mind that you'll have to give the API a good max value so that it's displayed at the end of the axis. Then it's just some math to calculate the grid step.
