It's pretty clear what's going on here- since they didn't announce this at all, (mostly) refuse to discuss it publicly, and: at least one comment on Reddit had them claiming there was some "encryption issue" preventing release of the source code. Better yet, thanks to changes in OS X of late many applications do not work at all with the paid version, whereas they did before.
You'd probably pull this stunt too, however skeezy it might be, if your app was suddenly #2 on the Top Paid list, mostly because people see it in the App Store update list, even though they didn't install it through MAS and didn't pay for it. Putting people off while claiming your app is still open source is probably pretty profitable. I've seen it happen in several cases but this is by far the most notable. In the Brave New World of App Stores and Markets every day that you make excuses like this and ignore people calling you out on your sketchy behavior is another day you rack up install count numbers in the Mac App Store. I think they should be suspended from Google Code until they release the source code, but that is just my opinion. It is clearly to their advantage to delay as long as they can.
