Isn't Scilab an open source alternative for matlab?

I'm using Matlab for research (computational neuroscience). It's not
so great if you need to develop time-critical code or stuff with fancy
GUIs etc, but its excellent for solving computational problems,
especially when there a vectors and/or matrices involved. And, you're
right, it can make neat graphics too :)
