@Frank, there are two separate issues here.

1) If this question is for an ongoing contest, then it's quite likely this
is cheating according to the contests rules.
2) The OP didn't ask for help, he/she asked for a solution in any (then
gave a very short list of any) language.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but from the person who said don't post assignments, I
didn't get that assignments shouldn't be asked about. But asking to do the
assignment for the OP is what shouldn't happen.

I don't think many (I know I wouldn't) would complain if someone says
something like "I'm in an algorithm course and my professor gave me this
assignment but I don't know how to solve it", then say what he/she has
tried or what it doesn't understand and shows that the interest is mainly
learning how to solve the problem. But this question is "solve this for me
by tonight".

Whatever your views, if you can't offer ideas, allow others to.

My view, and probably shared among others, is that this types of questions
(asking others to solve their problems) decreases the quality of this
group. That's why I feel it should be said so.

In the thread from a couple of days ago, where someone asked for a solution
for a competition qualifying question, some poor soul spent some time on it
and provide code in JavaScript. He didn't even get a "Thanks" he got "I
need it in a different language". If this would become a trend here less
people will help and we all lose.

To be honest, I found your answer perfect, you gave an algorithm name and
encouraged the OP to put some work on it. The problem is that I don't think
the OP will be happy about it, you clearly didn't give him what he asked
for "a solution in C, C++, Java or Python".

I hope you understand this rant is not directed at you, I'm just trying to
express to you why I consider this type of question inappropriate in this
group.
