As Ivan said, practice is the keyword. You should check the past contests on the page Shad sent and be able to solve problems at least from past Qualification rounds in order to expect to solve problems in future contests.
You should also check the tutorials at topcoder<http://community.topcoder.com/tc?module=Static&d1=tutorials&d2=alg_index>, and since we've already agreed practice is gold, you might want to join and participate in their algorithm matches (SRM) they have 4 of them per month. While it's different in format from the Codejam, the underlying skills needed in both have a huge overlap, so it's good practice.
