Hi, For most languages we use the package available for the latest Debian release. Unfortunately, the latest Debian release is pretty old. A new release is expected this year, and when we update to that, I assume many languages will get an updated version (hard to tell before the release which exact packages will be included in it).
Regarding check syntax, that will do a general syntax check that is not tied to the specific version. The features you mention are also not syntax differences, so they would most definitely not be picked up. See "Does the editor compile or otherwise evaluate my code?" under the Coding section of the FAQ <https://codingcompetitions.withgoogle.com/codejam/faq#coding>.
