It really depends on your gadget. If you have a web service where you display ads then a Google Desktop gadget can be a great way to expose this service to the user and make it easier for them to reach it. One of the main ways to earn money with desktop gadgets is probably by making users use your gadget to interact with a useful service which in turn shows ads. Because of the very small display size of gadgets you shouldn't try to add ads directly into the UI (although text links might be possible). One area where you could use AdSense is the detailsview where you can display webpages and HTML code. Be sure to check the Google AdSense TOS to see what is allowed by them and how you may use your AdSense code. Since desktop gadgets do not support displaying HTML code in the gadgets view object you cannot add the AdSense code into these views and I don't think they allow you to modify the code in any way.
Most developers that use AdSense in combination with desktop gadgets have the ads on the help and information pages for the gadget or on pages which are launched by the gadgets like search result pages or pages with detailed information about a certain topic.
